day two
Not sure what to title each of these blogs, so I'll go with what's easy for the first week.
Today I went on a 10-mile hike with my husband, and I felt like I was a good 10 years younger.
Once we were done, got in our truck and started back toward the road, we passed a bunch of hikers and ATV buggies/Jeep tours. Brian waved to each one. Some waved, some did not. It's a pretty friendly place around here, lots of tourists come out for outdoor adventure in this part of Arizona. I commented about some probably wishing they could jump in the bed of our Trail Boss Chevrolet to hitch a ride back to the trailhead. It was already about noon, about a hundred degrees, and full, blistering sun. Three women actually did ask as we eased by. We said sure, but that the full back seat was available too if they'd rather be out of the sun. They did not hesitate to accept. We drove about a mile and arrived at their parked car. One of our passengers offered us $20 for driving them back, even though we did not have to go out of our way. It surprised us that she would be so generous and appreciative of our assistance. One mile in those conditions is a lot. One mile in exchange for a twenty-dollar bill. All I saw was her hand and an extra $20 to spend (on probably a few Starbucks drinks for the drive home next week). What a blessing, or what an opportunity to give back? She tried to insist we take it.
Back when I lived in Asia, that was always a big thing: arguing and insisting over who gets to pay the bill after a dinner out with friends. It was usually my dad and another Chinese man. It was hilarious, because it always turned into this big show, a laughing matter for all at the table. The waiter or waitresses stood by helpless, waiting for the one who held out his arm the longest and who "won."
It is more blessed to give, than to receive, the Bible says. It does not always feel like it. Sometimes I wonder if that truth still holds true! Gas prices are crazy and still rising. I felt like I needed a nice, cold drink in town. But no, we insisted she keep it. Then we gave her a small pamphlet entitled "Knowing God" Knowing God- the author of mercy, goodness, beauty, blessing, all good things.
I'd rather be a Christian that reflects Christ's qualities, versus my own.
I felt a youthful energy today in body, in spirit and mind. All three. Today was a good day.
